What kind of icing to use for a cookie cake?

I usually just make regular cakes, but tomorrow I'm baking cake cookies with M & M's. I have to decorate the top with frosting but I'm not sure what type of frosting is best for a cake because is my first time. Would anyone be able to give suggestions and / or recipes. It would be greatly appreciated.
